Pune Police File Cheating and Forgery Case Against Five Pharmacy Shops for Allegedly Selling Counterfeit Drugs

The Vishrambaug police in Pune have officially registered a case of cheating and forgery against five pharmacy shops located in Sadashiv Peth, Kolhapur, and Mumbai. This action follows allegations that these establishments were involved in the sale of counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs, which were reportedly administered to critically ill patients suffering from severe conditions such as burns and liver failure.

FDA Investigation Uncovers Critical Discrepancies in Drug Composition

Inspector Arun Ghodke of the Vishrambaug police provided detailed insights into the case, stating that FDA inspector Krutika Jadhav (46) lodged a formal complaint after receiving laboratory test reports for the drugs in question. The investigation was initiated last June when FDA officials conducted raids at multiple shops across Maharashtra, collecting samples of tablets from various pharmacy stores for thorough analysis.

The state government's subsequent testing revealed alarming inconsistencies: the medicinal properties, specifically mentioned in milligram format on the labels and packaging, did not match the actual composition found in the samples. These discrepancies were particularly concerning as the drugs were marketed as life-saving medications for critically ill patients.

Police Probe Focuses on Supply Chain and Hospital Connections

Inspector Ghodke emphasized that the police are currently working to trace the origin and distribution network of these counterfeit drugs. "As of now, we do not know where these drugs were manufactured or how they were supplied to the pharmacy shops," he stated. The investigation will involve recording statements from the shopkeepers to identify the source and potentially uncover a larger supply chain involved in this illicit activity.

Additionally, authorities are verifying whether these pharmacists supplied the counterfeit drugs to city hospitals, where critically ill patients may have been treated with these substandard medications. This aspect of the probe is crucial to assess the full impact on public health and ensure accountability across the healthcare system.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation

Following the receipt of the test reports, FDA authorities decided to register a formal case against the shopkeepers and other individuals involved in the distribution of these counterfeit drugs. The case highlights significant lapses in drug quality control and raises serious concerns about patient safety in Maharashtra.

The police investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on:

  • Identifying the manufacturing source of the counterfeit drugs
  • Mapping the supply chain from production to retail
  • Determining the extent of distribution to hospitals and other healthcare facilities
  • Ensuring legal action against all parties involved in this fraudulent activity

This case underscores the importance of stringent regulatory oversight in the pharmaceutical sector to prevent such dangerous practices that jeopardize public health.
