Major Drug Bust in Pune: Two Arrested with ₹26.72 Lakhs Worth of Contraband
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Airport police in Pune apprehended two individuals on April 8, seizing a substantial cache of mephedrone drugs and a luxury SUV with a combined value of ₹26.72 lakhs. The operation unfolded on the Kharadi bypass, marking a critical victory in the city's ongoing battle against illegal drug distribution networks.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
The arrested suspects have been identified as Pritam Praful Kulkarni (37), a resident of Wadgaon Sheri, and Ubed Ansar Khan (27), who hails from Hadapsar. According to police reports, Kulkarni is currently unemployed, while Khan works as a private driver. The duo was intercepted by a vigilant police team acting on specific intelligence about their illicit activities.
During the arrest, authorities confiscated the mephedrone drugs along with a high-end SUV, which was being used to transport the narcotics. The vehicle, valued at approximately ₹10 lakhs, belonged to a friend of Khan. The remaining ₹16.72 lakhs represents the estimated street value of the seized drugs, highlighting the scale of this illegal operation.
Police Investigation and Suspect Statements
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII) Somay Munde provided crucial insights into the case. "The two had brought the drugs to sell them to a few individuals involved in parties and in the pubs," Munde stated. "We are questioning the duo on these individuals to uncover the broader network and identify the end consumers."
During interrogation, the suspects revealed that the mephedrone drugs were sourced from Rajasthan, where several manufacturing units operate. "The two told us that they brought the mephedrone drugs from Rajasthan. In Rajasthan, there are a couple of units that manufacture mephedrone drugs, and these drugs are brought by a few people based there. The local drug dealers sold these drugs to the duo," Munde elaborated.
Modus Operandi and Police Action
The investigation uncovered that the drugs were being transported to Pune for distribution to end consumers. "The drugs were being taken to Pune, and the duo was selling them to the end consumers," Munde explained. "The duo was on their way to deliver the drugs to the individuals when our police team received information about the drugs."
The arrest occurred while the suspects were traveling in the SUV, which was promptly seized by the police. This proactive intervention prevented the drugs from reaching their intended destinations, potentially disrupting supply chains to party scenes and pubs in the city.
Authorities are now intensifying their efforts to trace the Rajasthan-based suppliers and the local contacts involved in this trafficking ring. The case underscores the persistent challenges of cross-state drug smuggling and the critical role of timely intelligence in law enforcement operations.
