Pune Law Student Files Ragging Complaint Against Five Classmates

The Deccan Gymkhana police are investigating a complaint filed by a 35-year-old second-year law student, who has accused five classmates at ILS Law College in Pune of ragging him in the boys' hostel between October and December 2024.

Details of the Complaint

The complainant, a resident of Dharashiv district, has named five students from Maharashtra and various north Indian states in the First Information Report (FIR). According to the police, the alleged incidents occurred in the hostel premises where the five students would make comments, crack jokes, and tease the complainant, leading to verbal confrontations.

College Authorities Respond

College officials stated that the complaint relates to incidents reported nearly two years ago. A college committee conducted an inquiry and submitted a report to the University Grants Commission (UGC) in March 2025, concluding that no ragging had occurred. The matter was considered closed until it resurfaced as a police complaint.

Officiating principal Deepa Paturkar, who also heads the anti-ragging committee, told reporters that the college had investigated the matter in 2024. "There was some issue between students, and following the complaint, our committee conducted an inquiry and submitted a report to the UGC in March 2025 stating no ragging took place," she said. She added that the college was unaware of the police complaint until Sunday and assumed the matter was resolved.

Police Investigation Underway

Senior inspector Girisha Nimbalkar of Deccan Gymkhana police confirmed that an FIR was registered on Saturday night under Sections 3 (prohibition of ragging) and 4 (penalty for ragging) of the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999. "The student had approached our senior officers a few months ago, and a formal FIR has now been registered," she said.

Nimbalkar noted that there is an age difference between the complainant and the accused, who are all in their twenties and also second-year LLB students. "We will record statements of the students and the college administration during our investigation," she added.
