The city of Pune has witnessed a marginal decrease in cases of rape and molestation in the current year, 2025, as per the annual crime report released by the Pune police on Monday. This comes after a concerning surge in such crimes was recorded in 2024 compared to the previous year.
Proactive Police Strategy Yields Results
Pune Police Commissioner, Amitesh Kumar, attributed this positive trend to a series of targeted interventions implemented by the force. He stated that the shocking incidents at Bopdev Ghat and Swargate bus stand acted as a catalyst for a comprehensive action plan.
The multi-pronged strategy focused on several key areas:
- Vulnerability Mapping: Each police station conducted detailed mapping of high-risk and isolated spots within their jurisdiction.
- Enhanced Patrolling: The Damini Squad and local police intensified patrols, especially during evenings and nights in sensitive zones like hills, ghats, and poorly lit areas.
- Infrastructure Improvement: Coordination with civic authorities led to improved street lighting in identified dark spots.
- Community Engagement: Initiatives like 'Police Kaka' and 'Police Didi' programs were launched in educational institutions, while the Buddy Cop initiative was revived for working women.
- Dedicated Grievance Redressal: Every police station was assigned a dedicated officer to ensure swift handling of complaints filed by women.
Focus on Prevention and Swift Action
Commissioner Kumar emphasized that the force moved beyond reactive policing. "We identified high-risk areas, mapped vulnerable spots, inspected security arrangements, and checked CCTV systems," he explained. The police also organized counselling sessions for students and prioritized the quick resolution of women's complaints to build trust and deter potential offenders.
The commitment to regular patrolling in isolated areas after dark has been a significant factor in creating a sense of security and preventing crimes, the Commissioner added.
Scrutiny and Civic Collaboration
Neelam Gorhe, the Deputy Chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, has taken note of the reported decline. She stated her intention to verify the police data to ensure its accuracy. Gorhe also followed up on issues of isolated spots and inadequate lighting with the police and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials.
Her follow-up yielded concrete results, as civic authorities informed her that a total of 276 dark spots across the city were illuminated following the Bopdev Ghat incident. This collaboration between law enforcement, legislators, and civic bodies highlights a concerted effort to address the root causes that facilitate crimes against women.
While the slight decline is an encouraging sign, authorities acknowledge that sustained efforts are crucial. The focus remains on continuous monitoring, community partnership, and infrastructure upgrades to ensure the safety and security of women in Pune.
