In a decisive move against a rising trend of public alcohol consumption, the Prayagraj police have launched a special enforcement drive named 'Mission Car-o-Bar'. The crackdown specifically targets individuals who gather to drink inside or around parked vehicles, creating a nuisance in public spaces.
First Night of Action Sees 37 Challaned
The initiative swung into action on Saturday night, with teams from the Kotwali Nagar police station fanning out across identified hotspots in the town. After checking approximately 300 individuals, the police took legal action against 37 people found violating the law. All were challaned under Section 34 of the Police Act for the offense of consuming liquor in public places.
Targeting Nuisance Hotspots
Police teams focused their efforts on locations where groups were frequently reported to drink openly, causing disruption. These areas included:
- Park peripheries and public gardens
- Market lanes and commercial areas
- Bus stands and other transit hubs
- Major road intersections
A senior police official stated that the drive was a direct response to the growing practice of using parked cars as makeshift bars, which often leads to traffic obstruction and public inconvenience.
Public Concerns Prompt Police Response
The launch of 'Mission Car-o-Bar' follows numerous complaints from residents across several neighbourhoods. Locals had raised serious concerns about groups consuming alcohol openly in public view. The primary grievances included:
Obstruction of traffic and pedestrian movement. Creation of an atmosphere of discomfort and unease, particularly for women and families. General public nuisance and unruly behavior associated with these gatherings.
The police action aims to curb this culture and restore a sense of order and safety in public areas. The drive signals a continued effort by the Prayagraj police to strictly enforce laws against public drinking and address the community's complaints head-on.
