Prayagraj Police and Administration Address Magh Mela Incident

On Monday, the Magh Mela police and administration in Prayagraj provided clarity regarding a clash with followers of Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand. The incident occurred during the Mauni Amavasya snan, a key bathing day at the festival.

No Vehicles Allowed on Peak Snan Day

Officials stated that no vehicles were permitted on the peak snan day. They emphasized that there was no VIP protocol in place. Both police and administrative officials made multiple requests to Swami Ji and his followers. However, the group did not adhere to the established rules and regulations.

The mela police and administration are currently collecting evidence. This includes video footage to determine the next steps in the matter.

Clear Directions and Obstacles

Authorities claimed that clear directions were issued prohibiting all vehicles. They asserted that the procession of Swami's palki created obstacles near the Sangam Nose area.

Additionally, officials reported that the Triveni Pontoon Bridge, reserved for emergencies, was used by Swami Ji and his followers. Police on duty took a stand near Sangam Nose to prevent any potential mishaps.

Holy Dip Not Hindered

A senior mela official highlighted that no one was stopped from taking a holy dip in the Sangam. Many revered saints and seers performed the ritual without any special protocol.

The official added that there was no confusion over vehicle permissions. Frequent announcements were made through the public address system. These announcements clearly stated that no one was allowed to use vehicles within the mela campus on peak snan days.

Lack of Prior Information

Officials noted that Swami Ji did not provide any prior information about his plans. A day before the Mauni Amavasya snan, Swami Ji requested additional security and other facilities. The mela administration denied these requests as it was the main bathing day with no protocol gestures.

Appeal for Peaceful Bathing

Mela police and administrative officials made it clear that they did not prevent anyone from taking a dip. Instead, they appealed to all attendees, including seers, saints, and devotees, to follow the arrangements. The goal was to ensure peaceful and orderly bathing.

Officials claimed that they did not insult anyone, whether saints or devotees. The safety and interest of the bathers were their utmost priority.

A senior police officer stated, "Neither the mela police nor the mela administration stopped Swami ji on Sunday from taking a holy dip. We only appealed not to use a palki on the main Sangam route."
