Prayagraj: 17-Year-Old Gang Rape Survivor Dies by Suicide After Threats from Accused
In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, a 17-year-old gang rape survivor allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Chitrakoot district on Tuesday evening, according to police reports. The young girl, whose identity remains protected, was reportedly subjected to a horrific assault on March 4 when she went to fetch water from a well in her village.
Details of the Assault and Initial Response
The victim's father informed authorities that on the day of the incident, his daughter went to collect water but failed to return for an extended period. When her younger brother went searching for her, he discovered her in a dishevelled and traumatized state in a nearby field. The father alleged that three youths from the same village forcibly dragged the girl into the field and gang raped her for over two hours.
Despite the severity of the crime, the family initially chose not to file a formal police complaint, citing concerns about social stigma and potential repercussions. Police sources indicate that the accused individuals subsequently threatened the girl with dire consequences if her family pursued legal action, creating an atmosphere of fear that ultimately contributed to her taking the extreme step.
Police Investigation and Conflicting Accounts
Chitrakoot police have presented a somewhat different narrative regarding the initial response to the crime. According to their version, on March 4, officers approached the parents and requested a written statement to formally register an FIR. The parents reportedly declined this request and even provided a video statement explicitly stating they did not want any legal action taken in the case.
"No further action was taken after their video statement, and this was duly recorded in the general diary maintained at the police station," a police representative explained. Authorities further claimed that for the subsequent 38 days, they received no complaints or concerns from the family regarding the incident.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
Following the girl's tragic death, her father finally filed a formal complaint, prompting police to register an FIR under multiple legal provisions. The charges include relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Section 3/4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and Section 3(1) and 3(2)5 of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The three accused individuals, who remain at large, include two persons belonging to the Scheduled Caste community. During the investigation, authorities recovered a personal diary belonging to the deceased girl from her home, which may provide additional insights into her state of mind leading up to the tragedy.
A senior police officer stated: "A comprehensive investigation has been ordered into this heartbreaking incident, and appropriate action will be taken accordingly. We have formed three specialized police teams to apprehend the culprits. Furthermore, if any negligence is identified on the part of law enforcement officials during the initial handling of this case, disciplinary measures will be initiated without delay."
The father has alleged that the accused continued to harass his daughter with disgraceful remarks following the assault, and that the cumulative psychological trauma from both the rape and subsequent harassment ultimately drove her to suicide. This case highlights the complex challenges surrounding sexual violence reporting, social stigma, and victim protection in rural communities.
