Assembly Adjourned Amid Safety Concerns
Speaker of the Assembly announced the adjournment after receiving reports of waterlogging and disruptions caused by the relentless downpour. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of legislators and staff, as many areas faced flooding and traffic chaos.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai recorded over 200 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, leading to waterlogging on major roads and railway tracks. The suburban train services, the city's lifeline, were partially suspended on some routes due to water accumulation.
CM's Appeal to Citizens
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the Assembly, stating, "The weather forecast indicates more rain in the coming hours. I request all citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The administration is on high alert, and rescue teams are deployed in vulnerable areas." He also assured that the government is monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with disaster management authorities.
The CM further emphasized that schools and colleges in affected regions have been declared closed for the day, and citizens are advised to follow safety guidelines issued by the state disaster management cell.
Impact on Daily Life
Heavy rains have severely disrupted normal life in Mumbai and neighboring districts. Several low-lying areas reported waist-deep water, leading to the evacuation of residents to safer locations. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set up control rooms to handle emergencies.
Traffic movement on key arterial roads like the Western Express Highway and Eastern Express Highway was sluggish, with many vehicles stranded. The city's airports also experienced delays and diversions of flights due to low visibility and waterlogging on runways.
According to reports, at least three people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across the state, including electrocution and wall collapses. The state government has announced ex gratia of ₹4 lakh to the families of the deceased.
Government Preparedness
The Maharashtra government has deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in districts like Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Thane, which are also experiencing heavy rainfall. The CM has directed all district collectors to remain vigilant and ensure timely relief measures.
Fadnavis also mentioned that the state is prepared to handle any emergency, with hospitals and essential services on standby. "Our priority is to minimize loss of life and property," he added.
The Assembly is likely to resume proceedings once the weather improves, with no new date announced for the next sitting.
