Police shoot rape accused in legs during escape bid in Gandhinagar

In a dramatic incident in Gandhinagar, police officers were forced to open fire on a man accused of a heinous crime as he attempted to escape from custody. The accused, identified as Ramganit Yadav, was shot in the legs late on Saturday while allegedly trying to flee during a crime scene reconstruction.

The Crime and Intensive Investigation

Yadav was arrested for his alleged involvement in the abduction and rape of a four-year-old girl from the Indiranagar area near a metro station in Gandhinagar. The investigation, led by Police Inspector L P Desai of the Sector 21 police station, was intensive. Multiple police teams analyzed over 200 pieces of CCTV footage to zero in on a suspect seen near the crime scene.

The young victim, who is still recovering from her injuries, played a brave role. Police engaged with the child, who gradually provided directions that led them to a nearby forest, identified as the crime scene. Her description of the suspect was crucial. The CCTV analysis eventually led investigators to a construction site at a packaging plant in Sector 25, Gandhinagar, where around 300 labourers were checked. Yadav, a labourer from Bihar, was apprehended there.

The Dramatic Escape Attempt and Police Action

After his arrest and confession, Yadav was taken back to the area for the reconstruction of the crime. It was during this process that he made a sudden bid for freedom. Gandhinagar SP Ravi Teja Vasamsetty stated that the accused managed to escape during the reconstruction. Officers first shouted at him to stop, but when he continued running, they fired three rounds.

"He received injuries to the legs. The doctors are performing an operation, and once it is completed, we will be able to say if all three rounds hit him," SP Vasamsetty explained. Another police officer detailed that during interrogation, Yadav suddenly became aggressive and attempted to flee. In the ensuing chase, officers used their firearms to prevent his escape, resulting in non-fatal injuries.

Aftermath and Legal Proceedings

Yadav was immediately provided medical attention after being apprehended again. He is currently under police guard at a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. Police have confirmed that he is expected to be fit to stand trial for the serious charges against him.

The incident highlights the challenges law enforcement faces during investigations of sensitive crimes. The Gandhinagar police's extensive use of CCTV footage and their engagement with the young victim were key to cracking the case swiftly. The probe remains active as authorities prepare to present their evidence in court.
