Gujarat Police Dog 'Check' Wins Gold and Bronze at National Championship

In a remarkable achievement for the Gujarat Police, a three-and-a-half-year-old Labrador named Check has brought home a gold medal and a bronze medal from the 69th All India Police Duty Meet (AIPDM) Championship 2025-26. The event was held recently in Nagpur, showcasing the skills of police K9 squads from across the country.

Historic Victory After 16-Year Gap

According to an official statement released on Friday, this victory marks a proud moment for the Gujarat Police, as it is the first time in 16 years that a state police dog has won two awards, including a gold medal, at the national-level Police Duty Meet. The statement highlighted that Check, attached to the Anand district police, competed against 45 dogs from various state police forces and paramilitary units.

Recognition from Top Officials

On Friday, Director General of Police (DGP) K L N Rao met Check, his handler Ramesh Khant, and police dog training consultant Colonel Chandan Singh Rathore at Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar. He congratulated them on this significant achievement, emphasizing the hard work and dedication involved.

Competition Details and Categories

The AIPDM featured police dogs displaying their expertise in explosive detection, narcotics detection, tracking, agility, and obedience. More than 200 dogs from various state police and paramilitary forces participated across different categories. From Gujarat Police, six dogs competed in three categories: tracking, explosive detection, and narcotics detection, with two dogs in each category.

Check's Outstanding Performance

Check won a gold medal in the tracking category and secured a bronze medal in the overall tracking category. Colonel Chandan Singh Rathore, the dog training consultant, stated, "This is truly a proud moment for Gujarat Police, as we put in strenuous efforts to achieve this feat." He noted that Check's success reflects the rigorous training and commitment of the team.

According to police officials, there are approximately 160 police dogs across various districts in Gujarat. These dogs are trained to perform a wide range of tasks for investigations, including explosive and narcotics detection, crime tracking, alcohol detection, and even assault operations. This incident underscores the vital role that K9 units play in law enforcement and public safety.
