Meghalaya Police Detain Armed Individuals Amid Heightened Tensions in West Garo Hills

In a significant security operation, police in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, detained several individuals found in possession of lethal weapons during intensified surveillance at a checkpoint in Aramile, Tura, on Monday night. According to an official police statement, the search of vehicles led to the recovery of dangerous items including machetes, hammers, catapults, and other objects suspected to be intended for use in the ongoing communal conflicts plaguing the district.

Details of the Detention and Interrogation

Although the police did not specify an exact number, all occupants of the vehicles were detained and subjected to thorough interrogation. During questioning, the detainees reportedly admitted that they were heading toward the plain belt area, allegedly at the instigation of the ACHIK NGO group. Authorities have stated that they are actively investigating the possible motives behind this movement and probing for any larger conspiracy that might be fueling such activities.

The district has been experiencing unrest primarily over the issue of non-tribal participation in elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council. In response to the escalating tensions, police have significantly strengthened security measures across West Garo Hills to prevent further outbreaks of violence and maintain public order.

Prohibitory Orders and Curfew Extension

To curb the violence, the district magistrate has promulgated prohibitory orders under the BNSS, 2023, and the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act, 1990. These orders strictly ban:

  • The carrying of arms, explosives, or any harmful objects.
  • Activities such as organizing training camps, inciting violence, damaging property, or spreading inflammatory content.

Exemptions to these prohibitions apply only to essential services, government officials on duty, and individuals specifically authorized by the administration. The order took immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice, reflecting the seriousness of the situation.

Additionally, the curfew in West Garo Hills has been extended from 6 am on March 18 to 6 am on March 19. However, a relaxation period has been granted between 6 am and 6 pm on March 18 to allow residents some respite while maintaining overall security.

Arrests and Public Appeal

So far, 29 suspects have been arrested in connection with the recent violence in the district. Deputy Chief Minister in charge of home (police), Prestone Tynsong, indicated that more arrests are likely as investigations continue. The police have urgently appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or to the police control room in Tura, emphasizing community cooperation in restoring peace.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining law and order in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills, where communal tensions have been exacerbated by electoral disputes. The proactive measures by authorities aim to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of all residents.
