Father Admits Police Involvement in Macherla Honour Killing Case
In a startling development in the suspected honour killing of a 23-year-old woman in Macherla, Andhra Pradesh, the victim's father has confessed to police that officers assisted him in locating his daughter in exchange for monetary payments. This revelation has added a disturbing layer of corruption to the already tragic incident, intensifying public anger and calls for accountability.
Details of the Crime and Investigation
According to investigators, Chowdeswari was allegedly murdered by her father, Chandra Srinu, on March 18, 2024, after she married Nagaraju against his wishes. Srinu attempted to disguise the killing as a suicide and even made efforts to tamper with the post-mortem report. However, forensic evidence confirmed it was a homicide, leading to his arrest on April 1, 2024.
During interrogation, Srinu reportedly disclosed that a police officer helped him trace Chowdeswari's whereabouts and facilitated her handover to her family for a fee. Sources indicate that the father paid the officer in two instalments, highlighting a blatant misuse of authority.
Background of the Couple and Police Actions
Chowdeswari and Nagaraju, who had a love marriage, had relocated to Narasaraopet with assistance from a friend named Khaja. Police detained Khaja for questioning, during which he revealed the couple's location. Subsequently, the couple was brought back to Macherla.
Despite Chowdeswari explicitly stating that she was an adult and wished to remain with her husband, police allegedly handed her over to her parents. This decision is now under intense scrutiny, especially as the officer involved was reportedly on leave on the day of the murder, raising questions about procedural lapses and potential collusion.
Public Outcry and Demands for Justice
The incident has ignited widespread outrage across the region, with citizens and activists demanding strict action not only against the accused father but also against any officials found complicit. There are growing calls for a transparent and impartial investigation to uncover the full extent of police involvement.
Higher authorities are expected to initiate a deeper probe into the conduct of the police officials, focusing on accountability and reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future. The case underscores critical issues of honour-based violence and institutional corruption in law enforcement.
