Tragic Suicide in Pilibhit Village After Marriage Proposal Rejection
A heartbreaking incident has unfolded in Pilibhit district, where a 19-year-old woman was found dead, allegedly by suicide, following the rejection of her marriage proposal by her lover's family. The young woman, identified as Sukirti Chauhan, was discovered hanging from a tree in the backyard of her house in Hirpur village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Seramau North police station.
Details of the Incident and Police Complaint
According to police reports, the tragic event occurred on January 29, but a formal written complaint was only filed on Thursday by the deceased's mother, Sarojini Devi. In her statement, Sarojini Devi revealed that her daughter had been in a relationship with 20-year-old Rohit Kumar from the same village for nearly three years. The situation escalated when Sarojini Devi visited Rohit's house on January 27 to seek consent for their marriage from his mother, Rajkumari Devi.
Alleged Misbehavior and Threats
During this visit, Rajkumari Devi allegedly not only declined the marriage proposal but also abused Sarojini Devi, threatened to kill both her and her daughter, and forcibly ejected her from the premises. Upon learning about this hostile encounter, Sukirti Chauhan was deeply distressed and, two days later, took the extreme step of ending her life.
Police Action and Legal Charges
Station House Officer Sanjay Kumar confirmed that based on the mother's complaint, a case has been registered against Rohit Kumar and his mother, Rajkumari Devi. The charges include multiple sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), such as:
- Section 351(2) for criminal intimidation
- Section 352 for intentional insult
- Section 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt
- Section 108 for abetment to suicide
As of now, the accused individuals have not been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing. The police are actively pursuing the matter to ensure justice is served in this distressing case that has shaken the local community in Pilibhit.
