Pilibhit: Family Booked for Abetment to Suicide Over Daughter Births

Pilibhit Family Faces Legal Action After Woman's Suicide Over Harassment for Having Daughters

In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, three members of a family from Pilibhit district have been formally booked for abetment to suicide. This legal action comes days after a 29-year-old woman allegedly took her own life, reportedly due to prolonged physical and mental harassment she endured for giving birth to three daughters.

Details of the Heartbreaking Case

The incident occurred in village Bhanpur Handa, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Jahanabad police station. According to police reports, the woman ended her life on February 1, leading to the registration of a case on Tuesday evening. The accused individuals include the woman's husband, identified as Kaushal Patel (33), along with his elder brother and their father.

A written complaint filed by the victim's father, Chhatrapal (60), who resides in village Mallpur Kundara in Bareilly, provides crucial context. He stated that his daughter, Pinki Devi, was married to Kaushal Patel in February 2017. The harassment allegedly began after she gave birth to two daughters within the first four years of marriage. The situation reportedly worsened significantly following the birth of a third daughter, as her in-laws were said to have desired a son.

Failed Attempts at Resolution and Further Allegations

Despite repeated efforts by Pinki Devi's parents to mediate and resolve the ongoing dispute, no amicable solution could be reached. The complainant further alleged that when he rushed to his daughter's house upon learning of her death, the accused not only verbally abused him but also attempted to physically assault him, adding another layer of distress to the already tragic situation.

Legal Charges and Police Investigation

Jahanabad Station House Officer Pradeep Kumar Vishnoi confirmed that Kaushal Patel, his elder brother Yogendra, and their father Dal Chandra Patel have been booked under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include:

  • Section 85: Cruelty by husband or relatives of husband
  • Section 108: Abetment to suicide
  • Section 131: Assault
  • Section 352: Intentional insult

Police officials have clarified that no arrests have been made in connection with the case so far. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities gathering evidence and statements to proceed with appropriate legal action. This case highlights the severe consequences of gender-based harassment and the legal ramifications for those involved in such tragic outcomes.
