Peacock killed in car hit near DLF Magnolias Club

A peacock was killed after being struck by a car near DLF Magnolias Club in Sector 42, Gurgaon, on Friday. Given its status as India's national bird and a Schedule-I protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, a case was registered at Sushant Lok police station.

The incident came to light around 10 am when Sonia Malik, a resident of Sector 42, informed police that a vehicle had hit the bird. Police alerted the forest department, following which wildlife officials, including inspector Charan Singh and guard Rajnesh, reached the spot.

“The carcass of the peacock was found on the road divider. The forest department was alerted, following which wildlife staff arrived with an ambulance and coordinated further action,” an official said.

A veterinary examination was conducted by Dr Rajesh Godara, and the carcass was taken for post-mortem. A case was registered under Section 281 (rash driving) of the BNS and under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act at Sushant Lok police station.

Police said a special report was sent to the area magistrate and senior officials, and efforts are under way to identify the vehicle and driver involved in the incident using technical and human intelligence.
