A young woman's tragic death in Patna has led to the detention of her husband, with her family alleging relentless dowry harassment as the cause. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted a detailed police investigation.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Pinky Singh, aged 27, was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan in her residence located within the Shastri Nagar police station limits late on Friday night. The victim was married to lawyer Rahul Singh, a resident of AG Colony. Upon receiving information, police teams rushed to the spot.
City Superintendent of Police (Central), Diksha, stated on Saturday that the initial appearance suggested a suicide. "When the police arrived, her body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room. However, no suicide note was found at the spot," she informed. The body was subsequently sent to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna for a post-mortem examination to conclusively determine the cause and nature of death.
Father's Allegations of Dowry Harassment
The case took a serious turn when the deceased woman's father, Pappu Singh from Machhargaon in East Champaran, filed a formal complaint. He alleged that his daughter faced continuous torture and harassment from her in-laws for more dowry.
According to the complaint, Pinky was married to Rahul, son of Jivesh Singh from Dumaria, on December 8, 2022. Pappu Singh claimed he incurred massive expenses for the wedding, which included:
- Selling one bigha of ancestral land.
- Providing a dowry of Rs 12 lakh in cash.
- Gifting a car purchased on loan.
He further alleged that even after the marriage, the demands and abuse did not stop. Pinky faced repeated harassment and physical abuse, with an incident of beating and torture reported as recently as early 2025.
Police Investigation and Next Steps
Acting on the father's complaint, which frames the incident as a dowry death, the police have taken the woman's husband, Rahul Singh, into custody for interrogation. "The woman’s husband has been taken into custody for interrogation after the victim’s father lodged a dowry death case. The exact cause of death will be known from the post-mortem report. The police are investigating the case from all angles," stated CSP Diksha.
Ravindra, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Shastri Nagar, confirmed that a forensic team was also summoned to the scene to collect crucial evidence that could aid the investigators. The police are currently exploring all possibilities, waiting for the autopsy report to provide definitive medical evidence, and proceeding with the legal process based on the serious allegations made by the victim's family.
The case highlights the persistent social evil of dowry demands and the devastating consequences it can have on families.
