Comprehensive Animal Care Program
Dr. Gaurav Kumar, the PMC veterinarian leading this sterilization drive, explained the full scope of the program. "This drive includes catching the stray dogs, implementing animal birth control procedures, medical treatment, deworming, anti-rabies vaccination, and putting the strays back to their original location," he stated.
The corporation follows a systematic approach to ensure both animal welfare and public safety. A Rajasthan-based NGO manages the sterilization process under a tender valid until 2028.
Daily Operations and Infrastructure
Dr. Abhishek Choudhary, a veterinarian with the NGO, shared their operational targets. "The target is to sterilize and vaccinate up to 40 dogs per day," he revealed. The operations center around Ramchak Bairiya, where a specialized facility with 144 kennels accommodates animals during their recovery period.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajan Sinha provided financial details about the program. "The cost of the whole process is Rs 1,090 per dog," he said. "The corporation is doing this in accordance with the order from the Supreme Court for both the well-being and safety of the residents, as well as the stray dogs in Patna."
Future Plans for Stray Dog Management
Sinha addressed specific concerns about dogs in public areas. "Some dogs from public areas, like bus stops, hospitals, schools and airports, need to be relocated for the overall safety of the public as per the Supreme Court's orders," he explained.
The PMC has ambitious plans for improving infrastructure. An official confirmed, "The PMC is planning to build a dog pound on 1.29 acres of land in Ramchak Bairiya, which can house up to 2,000 dogs that will be taken care of by the civic body."
This comprehensive approach demonstrates Patna's commitment to balancing animal welfare with public safety concerns. The sterilization drive represents a significant step in managing the city's stray dog population while following judicial directives.
