Parents Express Disappointment Over Legal Outcome in 2018 Karbi Anglong Lynching Case

The parents of sound engineer Nilotpal Das and businessman Abhijeet Nath, who were tragically lynched in 2018 in Assam's Karbi Anglong district by a mob that mistakenly suspected them of being child lifters, have voiced their profound disappointment with the recent outcome of the lengthy legal battle. The trial court's verdict, delivered on Monday, has left the families grappling with mixed emotions as they process the judicial decision.

Acquittals Outnumber Convictions in Nearly Eight-Year Trial

In a development that has shocked the victims' families, the Nagaon district and sessions' judges court acquitted 25 of the 45 accused individuals, while convicting only 20. The trial, which spanned an exhaustive seven years and ten months, involved numerous arguments from both prosecution and defense, making the outcome particularly difficult for the bereaved parents to accept.

Gopal Chandra Das, father of Nilotpal Das, shared his candid reaction with media outlets, stating, "We are not that happy as 25 accused have been acquitted and only 20 have been convicted. We did not expect this outcome after such a prolonged trial that lasted nearly eight years, with extensive legal proceedings and arguments from both sides throughout the process."

Families Await Sentencing While Reflecting on Legal System

The families now await the sentencing phase, scheduled for April 24, when the court will determine the punishment for those convicted. Das emphasized, "We will be able to know about the punishment to be awarded to the convicts on April 24." This waiting period adds another layer of anxiety to an already emotionally draining experience for the grieving families.

Reflecting on the broader implications of the verdict, Das expressed concern about the legal system, noting, "There is no doubt that a few would get acquittal in the case. But, 25 out of 45 accused being acquitted is disappointing. Many have been acquitted due to absence of direct witnesses. If that is the case then, many accused in serious offences will get acquittal in the absence of direct witness. So, I feel there is a necessity of certain amendments in the legal system."

Second Family Echoes Disappointment and Remembers Victims

Ajit Kumar Nath, father of Abhijeet Nath, similarly expressed that the local court's verdict did not meet their expectations. He remarked, "We thought something different and the verdict was different. Let us wait and see now what punishment is awarded to the convicts on April 24."

In a poignant reflection on the personal tragedy, Nath shared memories of his son and his friend, describing them as close companions who shared a deep love for music and nature. "Both Abhijeet and Nilotpal were close friends and both were music and nature lovers. They went to Kangthilangso in Karbi Anglong to experience the beauty of the hills. They used to love trekking. How would they know their fate? We lost our sons," he added, highlighting the human cost behind the legal proceedings.

Background of the Tragic Incident

The lynching occurred in 2018 when a mob in Karbi Anglong attacked Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath based on unfounded suspicions of child lifting, a case that sparked nationwide outrage and raised serious questions about mob violence and justice in India. The incident underscored the dangers of misinformation and vigilante justice, leading to calls for stricter legal measures and public awareness campaigns.

As the families prepare for the sentencing announcement, their statements serve as a sobering reminder of the challenges in achieving justice in cases of mob violence, and the ongoing need for legal reforms to address such complex scenarios effectively.
