Blast in remote Gulmarg area claims one life, injures four

One person was killed and four others sustained injuries on Saturday after an unexploded ordnance detonated in a remote area of Gulmarg in Baramulla district, Jammu and Kashmir. The deceased has been identified as Zubair Ahmad Bajjad, a resident of Lateefabad Khudpora, Chandoosa, Baramulla, according to police.

The explosion occurred around 3 pm near the Sumli Wali Dhok area, where a loud blast-like sound was heard, prompting security forces to rush to the scene. Preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion happened when the deceased came into contact with an old explosive object lying in the area.

Police launch inquest, forensic examination conducted

Police stated that information was received regarding an incident in the remote upper reaches of Baramulla. Inquest proceedings have been initiated under relevant provisions of law, and a forensic examination of the scene has been conducted. Specialist teams are currently sanitising the area to rule out the presence of any other unexploded explosive material, according to an official statement.

Rumours of Army casualties dismissed by police

Soon after the incident, rumours circulated claiming that Army personnel had been injured. However, Baramulla Police dismissed these reports, calling them false and unsubstantiated. In a clarification, police stated that no Army personnel were injured at Asha Post. “The information being circulated is completely false, baseless and without factual basis. No Army personnel have sustained any injuries at Asha Post,” police said.

The police cautioned that spreading unverified information can create confusion and disturb public order. Citizens were advised to rely only on official sources for accurate updates. The incident highlights the persistent danger posed by unexploded ordnance in conflict-affected regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
