Major Drug Bust in Kochi: Odisha Native Nabbed with 5kg Ganja at Aluva Railway Station
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Ernakulam rural police have arrested a 26-year-old man from Odisha with a substantial quantity of ganja at Aluva railway station. The operation, conducted on Tuesday, marks a crucial step in curbing drug distribution networks in the region.
Joint Operation Leads to Arrest
The arrest was made following a tip-off that prompted a coordinated effort between the Aluva police and the district anti-narcotics special action force. Udhshab Pradhan, a native of Kandhamal in Odisha, was apprehended during this joint operation. According to police sources, the ganja, weighing approximately 5 kilograms, was smuggled from Odisha in a shoulder bag.
Intended Sale Among Migrant Workers
Investigations reveal that the seized drugs were intended for sale among migrant workers in the Perumbavoor and Kalady areas of Kerala. This highlights the targeted exploitation of vulnerable communities by drug peddlers. The accused, Pradhan, claimed to be engaged in painting jobs in Ernakulam, but police suspect his involvement in a larger drug racket.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend individuals who may have purchased ganja from the accused. The investigation team includes key officers such as narcotic cell DSP J Umesh Kumar, Aluva DSP T R Rajesh, inspector G P Manu Raj, and sub inspector K Nandakumar. Their efforts aim to dismantle the supply chain and prevent further distribution.
Additional Drug Seizure in Kochi
In a related development, the city police arrested a 41-year-old man, Praveen K of Arattukulangara, with 1.61 grams of MDMA near Kaloor stadium on Monday night. This arrest was made by a team led by ACP T D Sunil Kumar based on confidential information, underscoring the ongoing vigilance against drug-related activities in Kochi.
