Odisha Police on High Alert for Holi Celebrations
Ahead of the Holi festival, Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania has issued strict instructions to police officials across the state to enhance security measures and maintain law and order. During a virtual meeting held on Friday, Khurania directed Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) to intensify vigilance in sensitive areas and take stringent action against anyone attempting to incite violence or disrupt peace.
Heightened Security Measures Announced
Khurania emphasized the critical need for heightened alertness during the Holi festivities scheduled for Wednesday. Police stations have been specifically instructed to exercise extra caution in regions identified as prone to communal tensions or historical disturbances. The DGP stated, "We have issued advisories to police in all districts and commissionerate police. Police stations across the state have been instructed to maintain strict vigilance throughout the festive period."
Officers will conduct regular patrols in their respective jurisdictions to proactively prevent any untoward incidents. Special attention will be focused on crowded areas such as marketplaces, religious sites, and public gathering spots to ensure safety and security for all citizens.
Deployment of Quick Response Teams
To handle emergencies effectively, Khurania mandated that quick response teams must be fully prepared and operational. Additional police forces will be deployed in areas categorized as sensitive or vulnerable to potential disturbances. Furthermore, officers have been directed to closely monitor social media platforms to curb the spread of rumors, fake news, or inflammatory content that could escalate tensions.
Senior officers will personally oversee the situation in their assigned areas, coordinating with local community leaders to foster peace and harmony. Rapid response teams will be strategically stationed at key locations throughout the celebration period to ensure swift intervention if required.
Strict Actions Against Misconduct
The DGP further instructed strict legal action against miscreants involved in harassment, particularly targeting women and elderly citizens. Special drives will be conducted to check drunk-driving and reckless behavior on roads, aiming to reduce accidents and ensure public safety during the festivities. Khurania urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and celebrate the festival of colors responsibly, adhering to guidelines and maintaining communal harmony.
Enhanced Security for Foreign Tourists in Puri
In Puri, police have organized special security arrangements for foreign tourists participating in Holi celebrations. Puri SP Prateek Singh highlighted, "Though there has been no instance of misconduct towards any foreigner in living memory, we do not want to leave anything to chance." To prevent drowning incidents, hoteliers and lifeguards on the beach have been instructed to keep a vigilant watch on swimmers. Tourists are advised to seek assistance from lifeguards while bathing in the sea to ensure their safety.
These comprehensive measures underscore the Odisha police's commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure Holi celebration across the state, balancing festive joy with robust law enforcement.
