Odisha Records Significant Increase in Crime Rates for 2025

Official data released by state authorities has confirmed a troubling trend in Odisha, with overall crimes rising by 7.3% in 2025 compared to the previous year. The capital city of Bhubaneswar witnessed an even more pronounced increase, registering an 8.65% surge in criminal activities during the same period.

Detailed Crime Statistics Reveal Mixed Patterns

The state documented a total of 2,29,881 cognizable cases in 2025, marking a noticeable increase from the 2,14,113 cases recorded in 2024. In Bhubaneswar specifically, cases escalated from 14,416 to 15,664, contributing significantly to the statewide upward trajectory.

While murder cases experienced a marginal increase statewide—rising from 1,258 in 2024 to 1,304 in 2025, representing a 3.6% growth—other serious crimes showed a decline. Rape incidents decreased from 3,054 to 2,994, and robbery cases saw a sharper reduction from 2,582 to 1,802. Dacoity cases also slightly decreased from 356 to 353.

However, Bhubaneswar presented a different picture, with only robbery and burglary cases declining while other forms of crime, including murder and rape, soared. The data highlighted a substantial surge in petty offenses categorized under 'miscellaneous,' which played a crucial role in driving the overall rise in crime figures across the state.

Enhanced Law Enforcement Measures Implemented

In response to the escalating crime rates, the government has emphasized the critical role of specialized units such as the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and the Special Task Force (STF) of the state crime branch. These agencies are focusing on combating organized crime and financial fraud through coordinated efforts.

Preventive strategies have been intensified across the state, including the installation of CCTV cameras, rigorous vehicle inspections at strategic checkpoints, night blocking operations, and close monitoring of suspicious activities. A senior police officer elaborated on these measures, stating that surveillance along highways has been strengthened, with hotels, dhabas, and shops kept under watch to gather intelligence on potential criminal activities.

Interstate Coordination and Stringent Legal Actions

Police authorities have stepped up interstate coordination, holding regular meetings to share information on criminals operating across borders. This collaborative approach aims to enhance tracking and apprehension efforts. Police stations are executing warrants more rigorously, collecting comprehensive data on fugitives, and monitoring their movements closely.

Habitual offenders are being booked under stringent laws, including provisions of the National Security Act, to ensure they face severe legal consequences. Additionally, awareness campaigns are being organized to educate the public and deter criminal behavior, while improved interstate information exchange mechanisms facilitate swift action against offenders.

The government maintains that these comprehensive measures are designed to curb organized crime networks and enhance public safety across Odisha. The focus remains on creating a secure environment through proactive policing and community engagement.
