Naga Students' Federation Denounces Racial Violence Against Northeastern Women
The Naga Students' Federation (NSF) issued a strong condemnation on Wednesday in response to a series of recent racial and physical attacks targeting women from the northeastern states of India, occurring outside their home region. This includes a particularly disturbing incident involving a woman from Nagaland, which has sparked widespread outrage and concern.
Solidarity with Victims and Call for Justice
In a firm statement, the federation expressed unwavering solidarity with all victims and women from the northeastern region who have endured humiliation, intimidation, and violence. The NSF highlighted a specific case involving a young doctor from Nagaland at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Gorakhpur. According to reports, she was allegedly stalked, subjected to obscene remarks, racial slurs, and physical intimidation. The federation described this incident as a stark and alarming reminder of the persistent prejudice and discrimination faced by citizens from the northeastern states across India.
Pattern of Discrimination Evident in Multiple Incidents
Further underscoring the severity of the issue, the NSF pointed to another reported incident involving the harassment of three young women from Arunachal Pradesh in New Delhi. This case was cited as additional evidence of a disturbing and recurring pattern of racial discrimination that plagues individuals from the northeast, particularly women, when they venture outside their home states for education, work, or other purposes.
Demand for Concrete Action Beyond Condemnation
While acknowledging the condemnations expressed by various quarters and authorities in response to these attacks, the NSF emphasized that "condemnation alone is not enough" to address the root causes or ensure justice. The federation demanded stern and exemplary action against all culprits involved in such incidents. It called upon law enforcement agencies to ensure:
- Immediate arrests of the perpetrators
- Impartial and time-bound investigations into each case
- Strict punishment under the law without any leniency
The NSF warned that any leniency or delay in justice would only embolden perpetrators and perpetuate the cycles of racism and gender-based violence, undermining the safety and dignity of northeastern communities nationwide.
