In a significant breakthrough, the Sarnath police in Varanasi apprehended a notorious criminal early Tuesday morning, uncovering a shocking history of over two dozen serious crimes. The arrest was made during a routine vehicle inspection under the ongoing Operation Chakravyuh.
Dramatic Arrest at Sinhpur Underpass
Acting on heightened vigilance, police personnel were conducting checks at the Sinhpur underpass. Their attention fell on a motorcycle-borne individual whose behavior seemed suspicious. Upon searching him, the police team recovered a country-made firearm from his possession. Further inspection raised more red flags: the engine and chassis numbers of the motorcycle were deliberately scratched, and an Aadhaar card found on him was discovered to be fake.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for Sarnath, Vidush Saxena, stated that the immediate interrogation following the arrest led to the revelation of the suspect's true identity. He was identified as Ajay Singh, also known as Vijay, a resident of Khaga in Fatehpur district.
A Long and Violent Criminal History Unfolds
When police officials delved into his background, a terrifying pattern of violence emerged. Records confirmed that more than 22 criminal cases were registered against Ajay Singh across various districts of Uttar Pradesh. His alleged crimes span murder, robbery, and ransom demands. Due to the severity and organized nature of his activities, he had also been booked under the stringent Gangster Act.
The details of his past offenses paint a picture of a dangerous individual:
- On May 2, 2022, in Lucknow, he was involved in the killing of property dealer and Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) Vijayshankar Singh during a dispute that erupted while they were drinking.
- Back on September 13, 2007, he murdered a physician, Dr. D P Singh, in the Pandeypur area of Varanasi.
- In 2012, in Saidpur, Ghazipur, he was implicated in a serious incident where two brothers were shot and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees was looted.
A History of Evading Justice
Ajay Singh's arrest history reveals a pattern of briefly being apprehended only to secure release. In April 2013, he was arrested by Varanasi's Cantt police while in possession of a 9 mm pistol. However, he managed to obtain bail and was out of jail within a few months.
More recently, in September 2022, he surrendered in connection with an old gangster case at a Chandauli court. Yet again, by 2023, he was released. This repeated cycle ended with his latest capture during Operation Chakravyuh.
Following the arrest, the Sarnath police have registered a case against him under the Arms Act. ACP Saxena added that investigators are now focused on determining the purpose of his stay in the Varanasi district at the time of his arrest, probing for any potential planned criminal activity.
