Noida Police Officers Suspended Over Mishandling of Serious Criminal Case

In a significant disciplinary action, the Noida police department has suspended a station house officer (SHO) and a sub-inspector for alleged lapses in probing a grave complaint that includes charges of rape, concealment of identity, extortion, and religious conversion. The suspensions come amid mounting criticism over the handling of the case, which has triggered public protests and raised questions about police accountability.

Details of the Suspensions and Case Background

The suspended officers are identified as Phase-3 SHO Puneet Kumar and sub-inspector Preeti Gupta, who served as the investigating officer. Their suspension was ordered after senior officials raised serious concerns about how the case was managed, particularly the failure to invoke key legal provisions. Authorities noted that the officers did not apply the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, despite allegations fitting these statutes.

According to police sources, the complaint alleges that the accused individual befriended a woman while hiding his religious identity. He reportedly drew her into a relationship under the false promise of marriage and then repeatedly raped her. The victim further claimed that the accused recorded objectionable videos of her and used threats to circulate these clips on social media as leverage to sexually assault her and extort lakhs of rupees.

Escalating Scrutiny and Internal Inquiry

As public and internal scrutiny intensified, Noida Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh sought an explanation from Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Shakti Mohan Avasthy regarding the handling of the case. In response, a preliminary inquiry was initiated against Assistant Commissioner of Police Umesh Yadav to assess any supervisory failures or procedural errors.

The case has not only drawn administrative action but also sparked public outrage. Protests erupted outside the Phase 3 police station, with demonstrators demanding justice and a fair investigation. Senior police officers intervened, visiting the protest site to assure the public that the probe would be conducted impartially and with transparency.

Transfer of Investigation and Ongoing Efforts

In a move to ensure objectivity, the investigation has now been transferred to the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police. This shift aims to bring fresh oversight and rigor to the case. Meanwhile, police teams are actively working to trace and arrest the accused, who remains at large. The authorities have emphasized their commitment to a thorough and unbiased inquiry, vowing to address any systemic flaws highlighted by this incident.

This case underscores ongoing challenges in law enforcement procedures and the critical need for adherence to legal protocols in sensitive investigations. The suspensions serve as a reminder of the accountability mechanisms within the police force, aiming to restore public trust and ensure justice for the victim.
