NIA Intensifies Investigation in Malda Mothabari Violence Case with Nine More Detentions
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has significantly escalated its probe into the violent incident at Mothabari in Malda district by detaining nine more individuals for questioning. This latest development brings the total number of people apprehended in connection with the case to 71, as authorities work diligently to piece together the events of April 1.
Interrogations Focus on Uncovering Attack Motive
According to official sources, the newly detained suspects are currently undergoing intensive interrogation. The primary objective is to uncover the precise motive behind the coordinated attack on judicial officers, who were subjected to a nine-hour gherao (siege) at the Mothabari block office. Investigators are examining whether the violence was premeditated or spontaneous, and what specific grievances or external influences may have fueled the aggression.
Geographical Spread and Cross-Border Elements Emerge
NIA sources have revealed intriguing details about the geographical origins of some agitators. A section of the protesters arrived at the Mothabari block office from distant villages such as Kuriatar and Kahala, located more than 10 kilometers away from the incident site. This suggests a level of organization and mobilization beyond local spontaneous action.
More significantly, the investigation has uncovered that some individuals involved in the agitation actually traveled from Pakur in neighboring Jharkhand state. The NIA is actively working to establish the identities of these cross-border participants and determine their specific roles in the violence. This interstate dimension adds complexity to the case and raises questions about potential broader networks or instigation.
Involvement of Booth Level Officers Under Scrutiny
In a concerning development, NIA sources have confirmed that some Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were involved in the agitation. BLOs are local electoral officials responsible for maintaining voter lists and facilitating elections at the grassroots level. Their alleged participation raises serious questions about the impartiality of local administrative structures and whether official positions were exploited to mobilize protesters.
Current Case Status and Specific Charges
As of the latest update, 62 people have been formally arrested in the Mothabari violence case. Among these, nine individuals face specific charges related to blocking the judges' vehicles and physically attacking the judicial officers during the prolonged siege. The distinction between detention for questioning and formal arrest indicates the NIA's methodical approach to building a legally sound case.
The April 1 incident saw judicial officers besieged for nine hours at the Mothabari block office, with protesters preventing their departure and reportedly subjecting them to physical intimidation and violence. The NIA's expanded investigation now encompasses not just the immediate perpetrators but potentially broader networks that may have planned or facilitated the attack on judicial authorities.
