Mother and Son Arrested in South Delhi Hit-and-Run Case

In a tragic incident that has shocked the capital, a 19-year-old first-year law student and his 50-year-old mother were arrested on Tuesday in connection with a hit-and-run case in south Delhi's Greater Kailash-I. The accident, which occurred last week, resulted in the death of a 41-year-old domestic help and cook, Surendra Das.

Details of the Fatal Accident

The incident took place on March 31 when Surendra Das was returning on his motorcycle to the GK B-block house where he worked, after buying bread from a nearby market. He was allegedly hit by a speeding car, and the driver fled the scene immediately. The accused driver, identified as Ruhan Chadha, is a resident of a nearby block in Greater Kailash.

His mother, Niharika Chadha, runs a boutique from home and is the registered owner of the vehicle involved, a silver Maruti Ciaz. According to DCP (South) Anant Mittal, "She allegedly concealed evidence, attempted to have the vehicle repaired, and harboured her son after the crash despite knowledge of the accident."

Legal Charges and Investigation

A case has been registered at the Greater Kailash police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Ruhan faces charges under sections 106(1) for causing death by negligence and 281 for rash driving on a public way. Niharika is charged under sections 238 for causing disappearance of evidence and 249 for harbouring an offender.

Police revealed that Ruhan was driving around the locality with a female friend at the time of the incident. An officer stated, "He was spotted by an unknown person, causing him to panic and drive the car in a rash and negligent manner." The duo was not intoxicated during the accident. Notably, Ruhan had received his driving licence only in January this year.

Police Investigation and Evidence

Initial footage from the accident spot provided limited leads, showing only the last four digits of the car's registration number and confirming it had a Delhi number plate. With this information, investigating officers expanded their search radius and mapped the possible escape route.

The car had come from inside B block and allegedly fled through the main front gate. Police traced its path towards the Archana traffic signal, then to the Kailash Colony metro station, before it returned home. Based on the partial registration number and vehicle make, police obtained data on suspected vehicles from the transport department.

These vehicles were physically verified at their registered addresses, with owners questioned and vehicles inspected for damage. To evade detection, Ruhan had allegedly hidden the car in nearby Zamrudpur. The car was later seized in a damaged condition.

Victim's Family Demands Justice

Meanwhile, Das's family members have demanded either monetary compensation for his children's education or strict punishment for the accused. Das, who lived in Zamrudpur, is survived by his wife Meena Devi and their three children: Preeti, Amit, and Ritesh. Preeti is in Class XII, while Amit and Ritesh are in classes X and IX.

Meena Devi told reporters, "He was the only earning member of the family. I now have to look after my children and secure a better future for them." Das's younger brother, Nilesh Kumar, echoed the sentiment, asking, "He has three young children. Who will take care of them now?"

The arrest highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and accountability in urban areas, with this case drawing attention to the devastating impact of hit-and-run incidents on vulnerable families.
