Nagpur's Butibori Issues Final 8-Day Fire Safety Ultimatum to 19 Non-Compliant Shops and Bars
In a decisive crackdown, the Butibori Municipal Council in Nagpur has issued a final 8-day ultimatum to at least 19 commercial establishments for failing to adhere to mandatory fire safety norms. The non-compliant units include shops, showrooms, bars, and wine outlets, which have been operating without the required fire prevention and life safety measures.
Strict Actions Loom for Non-Compliance
Authorities have warned that failure to comply within the deadline will result in severe consequences. Strict actions such as disconnection of electricity and water supply, closure of premises, and sealing of buildings are on the table. This move underscores the council's commitment to enforcing safety regulations to protect public welfare.
Inspections Reveal Widespread Violations
The crackdown followed comprehensive inspections conducted by the Butibori Municipal Council's fire department. These inspections revealed that several high-footfall establishments were operating without conducting mandatory fire audits or implementing essential fire safety protocols. The action is being taken under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006 (amended 2023), and the Rules of 2009, highlighting the legal framework driving these enforcement measures.
Background and Previous Notices
On the directions of Chief Officer Rajendra Chikhalkhunde, the fire department had issued primary fire safety notices to over 200 establishments nearly six months ago. While some units, particularly those previously under MIDC limits, achieved compliance, many within the municipal council area ignored repeated notices. Despite being granted a 30-day period earlier, 19 establishments continued to flout the norms, prompting this final warning.
Phase One Inspections and Future Plans
In the first phase, inspections targeted bars and restaurants, wine shops, garment stores, bike showrooms, electronics shops, and commercial complexes. These establishments were inspected under Section 5, issued violation notices under Section 6, and later served reminder notices. Officials announced that the next phase will cover a broader range of facilities, including:
- Hospitals, schools, and colleges
- Petrol pumps and gas godowns
- Marriage halls and large residential buildings
- Banks, hotels, and lodges
Official Statement on Fire Safety Importance
Fire Officer Rohit Shellare emphasized the critical nature of fire safety, stating that it is directly linked to the protection of life and property and cannot be treated as a mere formality. This statement reinforces the urgency behind the council's actions and serves as a reminder to all businesses to prioritize safety measures.
The Butibori Municipal Council's proactive stance aims to ensure that all commercial establishments in the area adhere to fire safety standards, thereby safeguarding the community from potential hazards. The upcoming inspections in the second phase are expected to further tighten compliance across various sectors.
