Amravati Abuse Case: Nagpur Teen Breaks Silence, Travels 250km to Record Statement
In a significant development in the sensational Amravati sexual abuse scandal, a 15-year-old survivor from Nagpur has demonstrated immense courage by breaking social taboos. On Saturday, she traveled approximately 250 kilometers to the Paratwada police station in Amravati district to record her statement before the special investigation team (SIT). This brave step marks a crucial breakthrough in a case that has been grappling with the challenge of survivor reluctance due to fear of social stigma.
Survivor's Courage and Police Efforts
The Nagpur girl, who was befriended during the Urs of a revered Sufi saint, is believed to be the only survivor lured offline in this case. Amravati SP (Rural) Vishal Anand confirmed her condition, stating, "She is healthy and mentally stable." Her statement was recorded by women SIT members, led by Yavatmal police inspector Yasodhara Muneshwar, along with Amravati child protection officers, ensuring a sensitive and supportive environment.
This development comes after a concerted effort by Amravati police, in coordination with the State Minorities Commission, Child Welfare Committee, and counsellors. Despite identifying eight survivors following the interrogation of key accused Ayaan Ahmed, none had come forward initially. Police appealed to families through community leaders, promising confidentiality, which legal provisions already guarantee. The 15-year-old's decision to speak out is seen as a direct result of these outreach initiatives.
Legal Proceedings and Accused Details
Police are now considering additional sections to the FIR registered suo motu on Monday. The FIR, filed on April 13 based on details from confidential sources, already names key accused Ayaan Ahmed, co-accused Uzer Khan, and six others. Charges include:
- POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act)
- Section 67 and 67(A) of the Information Technology Act
- Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act
While Ayaan Ahmed and seven others are in custody for sharing videos on social media, investigators are examining whether there are more survivors. The accused frequented locations such as cafes, a flat in Amravati, and Chikhaldara hill station with several girls, raising concerns about the scale of the abuse.
Political Context and Appeals
The case gained public attention when BJP MP Anil Bonde met Amravati SP Vishal Anand on Sunday, demanding action against the accused seen in viral videos. Bonde had claimed that over 180 girls were exploited. Guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule confirmed the survivor's statement after a closed-door meeting with police officials, stating, "A 15-year-old survivor from Nagpur displayed courage to give her statement to police."
Bawankule appealed to other survivors to come forward, promising all possible government help. He also urged people to provide evidence or information, asserting, "We will ensure that no accused goes scot-free. We will trace them down from any corner of the country or abroad where they might have gone into hiding." Additionally, he mediated between party colleagues former MP Navneet Rana and Maharashtra minority commission chief Pyare Khan, who were sparring over the case, advising restraint and emphasizing that evidence should be submitted to police rather than through media statements.

The biggest legal hurdle in this case has been the lack of complaints from survivors, driven by fear of social stigma. With seven other identified survivors yet to come forward, police continue their outreach efforts.
