Nagpur Crime Saga: Mother Jailed for Drugs as Son Evades Police in Rs 45 Lakh Burglary

In a startling criminal case unfolding in Nagpur, a woman has been serving a two-year sentence in Raipur Central Jail, Chhattisgarh, on charges related to ganja (marijuana). Meanwhile, her son remains a fugitive, wanted in multiple criminal cases, including a high-profile burglary in Manish Nagar last week that involved loot worth Rs 45 lakh.

Family Ties to Criminal Activities

The accused, Sheikh Ramjan, is the son of Darbari, who is currently incarcerated in Raipur. While Darbari continues her sentence, Ramjan operates underground, evading police raids to target houses for theft. Police sources indicate that this is not an isolated incident; several top burglars have family members, particularly women, actively involved in criminal enterprises.

These women often assist in disposing of stolen valuables, such as gold ornaments, and play a crucial role in arranging bails and bonds for arrested associates. This network creates a complex web that blends street-level crime with courtroom strategies, making it challenging for law enforcement to dismantle.

Manish Nagar Burglary and Ramjan's Criminal Record

Ramjan was identified through CCTV footage as one of the primary culprits in the Manish Nagar house-breaking incident. He fled the scene with accomplices, making off with booty valued at Rs 45 lakh. Authorities suspect he faces more than 20 cases, many of which involve pending arrests.

Amid Ramjan's ongoing criminal activities, his mother, Darbari, was apprehended by Raipur police from Nagpur for her involvement in narcotics dealing. Sources also reveal that Ramjan has a chain-snatching case against him in Raipur, further highlighting his extensive criminal history.

Notorious Gang and Sophisticated Operations

Three other individuals linked to this criminal network are already behind bars: notorious burglars Mohd Zakir Mohd Shaheed (alias Jabbar), Govind Sakhare, and Ashutosh Ravare. Collectively, they have around 25 cases of theft and burglary against them.

Jabbar, a hardened criminal, operates multiple gangs across areas like Sakkardara, Sonegaon, Ajni, and Khaparkheda. Ramjan was part of Jabbar's area-based modules, which follow a specific modus operandi: entering new localities, recruiting local operatives, executing night-time house-breaks, looting valuables, and then disappearing without a trace.

Jabbar's criminal reach extends beyond Maharashtra to neighbouring regions, making him a significant threat to public security.

Legal Shield and Bail Strategies

What makes Jabbar particularly elusive is his sophisticated "legal shield"—a dedicated team comprising legal experts, bail guarantors, and intermediaries who swiftly file bail applications upon arrest. Often, Jabbar secured release within just three days of being apprehended, allowing him to repeat the cycle of crime: rob, get caught, walk free, and strike again.

Police describe this as a calculated strategy that undermines law enforcement efforts and perpetuates insecurity in communities. The family's network exemplifies how criminal elements can exploit legal loopholes to evade justice.

Police Response and BNS Invocation

In response to these challenges, Beltarodi police, led by senior inspector Mukund Kawade under the supervision of zonal DCP Rashmitha Rao, are actively hunting for Ramjan. To combat habitual offenders, authorities have taken a tougher legal stance.

Recently, Beltarodi Police invoked Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 112, which pertains to petty organised crime, to designate a four-member burglary gang as an organised group. This step aims to curb easy bails and ensure stricter prosecution for serial house-breakers.

Police stress that tagging such gangs under BNS significantly raises the bail threshold, as it mandates a minimum of one-year rigorous imprisonment, extendable up to seven years, along with fines. This measure is designed to deter repeat offences and enhance public safety.

Recent Breakthroughs and Recoveries

The police action has already yielded results. Two burglary cases at Manish Nagar and Narendra Nagar were detected following the arrest of the gang. This led to the recovery of stolen items worth Rs 15 lakh, connecting the accused to multiple unreported burglaries.

Except for Ramjan, who remains at large, the rest of the accused are now lodged in Nagpur Central Jail. The operations were spearheaded by PSI Kishor Malokar under senior inspector Kawade, with oversight from DCP (Zone-4) Rao.

This case underscores the ongoing battle against organised crime in Nagpur, highlighting the need for robust legal frameworks and vigilant policing to protect innocent lives and property.
