Nagpur Rural Police Launch Major Crackdown on Repeat Traffic Violators
In a significant move to enhance road safety, the Nagpur Rural Police traffic branch has initiated a rigorous enforcement drive, resulting in the suspension or cancellation of driving licences for 141 motorists. This action follows the submission of approximately 2,500 detailed proposals to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) targeting habitual offenders who have repeatedly flouted traffic laws.
Comprehensive Review Uncovers Widespread Violations
A thorough analysis conducted by the traffic branch revealed a pattern of recurring offences among numerous drivers. The review highlighted serious infractions such as exceeding speed limits, jumping red signals, overloading vehicles beyond legal capacity, and driving under the influence of alcohol. These violations have been identified as key contributors to the rising number of road accidents in Nagpur's rural areas, prompting urgent intervention from authorities.
Police officials compiled extensive data from e-challan records to identify 2,494 drivers with multiple violations. Each case was meticulously documented and forwarded to the RTO with recommendations for stringent penalties, including licence suspensions or cancellations. The process is currently underway for the remaining cases, indicating that this is only the initial phase of a broader, sustained effort.

Rural SP Harssh Poddar emphasized the critical need for this crackdown, stating, "A majority of these cases involve overspeeding, which remains the leading cause of fatalities in Nagpur rural. There was a need to send a strong message to curb this trend. We identified offenders with three or more repeated violations and forwarded their details for action. This is only Phase 1 of the drive, and more such measures will follow."
An official from the traffic branch added, "The initiative is expected to serve as a deterrent and promote greater discipline on roads and highways in Nagpur's rural areas." This sentiment was echoed by a police spokesperson who noted, "Road safety is a shared responsibility. Repeated violations not only invite severe penalties but also put innocent lives at risk."
