Tragedy Strikes in Malad East as Young Boy Drowns in Construction Pit
In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the community, an eight-year-old boy lost his life after falling into a deep, water-filled pit at an unbarricaded construction site in Malad East, Mumbai. The tragedy occurred on Thursday night, highlighting severe lapses in safety protocols at urban development sites.
Desperate Search Ends in Tragedy
Divyansh Rajesh Mourya, a Class 3 student at a civic-run school, had stepped out after dinner around 8 PM to play near his home in the Ambewadi slum. According to his uncle, Ram Ishwar Mourya, the boy went to retrieve a ball that had rolled across the road to the construction site. When he failed to return, his family launched a frantic search.
"Everyone started panicking and went out looking for him. No one could trace him. However, his father didn't give up and kept looking," said Ram Ishwar Mourya. Around 3 AM, after nearly seven hours of searching, the boy's father decided to check the construction site. There, he discovered the horrifying scene: his son floating in an open pit filled with water.
Deep Pit and Lack of Safety Measures
Locals who gathered at the site reported that the pit was approximately 15 feet deep. Neighbor Aaditya Nishad stated, "The boy would have surely drowned after falling into such a deep pit. There were CCTV cameras at the construction site, and police have already collected the footage. The footage will clearly establish that it was due to the lack of safety measures at the site that the boy fell into the pit and died."
The pit was filled with drainage water flowing from an upstream Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project, adding to the hazardous conditions. Despite the presence of CCTV cameras, which captured Divyansh entering the compound, the site remained unbarricaded, with no visible warnings or protective barriers.
Legal Action and Community Outrage
Kurar police have lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the site engineer and the contractor for negligence under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The construction site is being developed by Mauli Construction. A police officer confirmed that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible, emphasizing that the CCTV footage supports the allegations of safety negligence.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who are demanding stringent action against the developer for failing to implement adequate safety measures. Former Malad corporator Vinod Mishra from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for accountability beyond the immediate contractors. He insisted that civic authorities, who are tasked with monitoring whether developers take proper precautions at their sites, must also be held responsible.
Family and Aftermath
Divyansh lived with his parents and younger sister. His father runs a grocery shop opposite Kurar Metro station, while his mother is a homemaker. After the discovery, the boy was rushed to a private hospital nearby, where doctors declared him dead. The family then took him to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli for further procedures.
At the time of reporting, the child's final rites had not yet been carried out, as his body was sent for a postmortem examination. The community remains in mourning, with calls for improved safety regulations at construction sites to prevent such tragedies in the future.
This incident underscores the critical need for stricter enforcement of safety standards in urban development projects, particularly in densely populated areas like Mumbai, where construction sites often border residential zones.
