MUMBAI: Police, supported by the bomb detection squad, searched and checked the entire area within Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the nearby locality after an email arrived carrying the subject line: "We Have Placed Bombs and it is going to explode very soon".
Notably, the message, which opened by claiming "We are from a terrorist group", finished the threat email with "HAIL SWAT TERROR X SWAT KATS" (which is taken from an animated series SWAT Kats).
Sahar police filed a non-cognisable (NC) offence against an unidentified sender. "The team working on the case suspect the person has used VPN network to send the mail using a mail id-asmodeusoo884@gmail.com to feedback.bom@adani.com (Mumbai Airport Terminal 2). The team that assessed the mail and after frisking the airport premise declared it a hoax. However, alert has been declared and a close watch is been kept to avert any untoward incident," said an officer from Sahar police station.
The threat email was received at 11.22am on Saturday. "Subject: WE HAVE PLACED BOMBS. Content of the mail said: We are from a terrorist group, we have planted a bomb inside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and it is going to explode very soon, the time is running. This is only the first of many places that our group will attack, we will strike everywhere and anywhere, you will soon discover the true potential of our terror. HAIL SWAT TERROR X SWAT KATS," the threat mail claimed.
An officer stated that, after this information was received, a BTAC (Bomb Threat Assessment Committee) meeting took place at Mumbai Airport from 11.55am to 12.10pm. "The committee evaluated the threat and declared the call to be 'Non-Specific.' Furthermore, during the meeting, instructions were issued to conduct anti-sabotage checks within the airport premises and to remain vigilant regarding security. Accordingly, anti-sabotage checks are currently being carried out in the airport area," said the officer.
