Four-Month Manhunt Ends: Police Nab Prime Accused in Gruesome Village Murder

In a significant breakthrough, police from the Belsor police station in Nalbari district have apprehended the main suspect in a shocking case of robbery and murder that rattled a local village. The arrest of Kalpajyoti Deka (20) comes nearly four months after the brutal killing of elderly resident Promod Barman in Mohkhuli village back in August.

Technical Surveillance Leads to Arrest in Home Village

According to officials, Deka had been evading capture since the night of the crime. Nilomoni Nath, the officer-in-charge of Belsor police station, revealed that officers utilized technical intelligence to track the accused's movements. Their efforts culminated in an arrest on Saturday after confirming Deka had returned to Mohkhuli village.

"Deka is from Mohkhuli itself and lived barely 500 metres from Barman’s home. He knew Barman and his wife quite well," stated OC Nath. "As soon as we confirmed he was back in the village, we moved in and arrested him. During interrogation, he admitted that he knew the family closely."

A Brutal Crime and a Possible Motive

The horrific incident occurred on the night of August 29. While Promod Barman was in his living room and his wife was preparing dinner nearby, a group of robbers forcibly entered their home. The assailants overpowered and tied up the elderly couple. When Barman attempted to resist, he was killed in front of his helpless wife.

Officer Nath suggested a possible motive for the murder. He indicated that Deka, who reportedly covered his face during the robbery, may have killed Barman out of fear that the victim would recognize him. The police official noted that this was allegedly Deka's first criminal offence.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

A formal case was registered at the Belsor police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, specifically Sections 103(1), 309(6), and 61(2)(a). Following his arrest, Kalpajyoti Deka was presented before a local court on Sunday. The court has granted the police two days of custodial remand for further questioning.

The investigation remains active as authorities probe the potential involvement of other individuals. "We are investigating whether more people were involved," OC Nath confirmed, indicating that the police are pursuing all leads related to the accomplices mentioned in the initial crime report.

The arrest has brought a measure of relief to the Mohkhuli village community, which was deeply disturbed by the violent crime committed against one of its elderly residents. The case highlights the use of technical surveillance by police in tracking down fugitives and underscores the persistent efforts to solve violent crimes in the region.
