Lucknow's Quiet Neighborhoods Disrupted by Illegal Bike Modifications
The serene atmosphere of Lucknow's residential areas is increasingly being shattered by the deafening roar of cruise and sports bikes, transforming peaceful zones into hotspots of noise pollution and public nuisance. Experts highlight that while many high-end motorcycles naturally produce louder exhaust sounds, a growing number of bikers are illegally modifying silencers and spark plugs to imitate the thunderous noise of superbikes, primarily for entertainment and display purposes.
Health and Safety Risks from Unauthorized Alterations
This trend, however, comes with significant consequences, causing distress to local residents, especially the elderly and children who are more vulnerable to noise-related health issues. According to industry professionals, factory-fitted silencers are designed to keep noise levels within the permissible 80-decibel limit as mandated by the Central Motor Vehicles Rules and environmental protection standards. In contrast, aftermarket modifications often push noise levels well beyond these limits, exacerbating noise pollution and potentially leading to long-term engine damage.
Noor Ahmad, an automobile supervisor at a local workshop, warns, "Unapproved aftermarket modifications, particularly in exhaust systems and engine components, not only compromise vehicle safety and efficiency but also drastically reduce the lifespan of the bike. In severe cases, such alterations can even result in vehicles catching fire, posing a direct threat to riders and bystanders."
Easy Availability and Public Outcry
Despite special enforcement drives by the Lucknow police targeting these modifications, illegal silencers remain readily available in spare parts markets across areas like Lalbagh and Indira Nagar. Residents and commuters have voiced strong concerns about the inconvenience and fear caused by these noisy bikes. Anil Kumar, a resident of Khayali Ganj, reports, "The noise from these modified bikes can be heard from nearly two miles away, disrupting daily life and sleep patterns."
Saba Khan from Aminabad shares a harrowing experience: "While returning from my uncle's house in Chowk, a biker suddenly sped past us, creating an unusually loud and frightening noise. My daughter was so terrified that she cried uncontrollably for almost an hour, highlighting the psychological impact on families."
Legal Penalties and Police Action
Violations of noise regulations can attract hefty fines of up to Rs 10,000, suspension of driving licenses, or even imprisonment for up to three months. However, these measures have proven insufficient in deterring bikers who continue to flout the rules. In response, DCP (Traffic) Raveena Tyagi informed TOI that a focused drive against modified silencers is being conducted citywide. She stated, "Our efforts include regular checks at key junctions and hotspots, immediate issuance of challans, removal or seizure of illegal silencers, and strict action against garages involved in selling or fitting such devices to curb this menace effectively."
The ongoing crackdown aims to restore peace and safety in Lucknow's neighborhoods, emphasizing the need for public awareness and stricter enforcement to combat noise pollution from unauthorized bike modifications.
