Trichy Police Arrest Minor Boy and Aunt for Rash Driving Without License
In a significant enforcement action, Trichy city police arrested a minor boy and seized a high-value sports bike from him near Srirangam on Tuesday night for riding without a valid driving license. The police also arrested his aunt, Vinitha, as the vehicle was registered in her name, invoking strict legal provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act.
Incident Details and Police Action
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 9:30 pm near Nelson Road Junction in Srirangam, where officers were conducting routine vehicle checks. The minor boy, hailing from Thiruvanaikovil, was riding the sports bike in a rash and negligent manner, drawing immediate attention from the authorities.
During interrogation, it was revealed that the youth was underage and did not possess a driving license, leading to his detention on the spot. The police seized the bike, which is valued at approximately Rs 2 lakh, as part of the investigation.
Legal Charges and Arrest of Aunt
On Wednesday, the police took further action by arresting the boy's aunt, Vinitha, since the bike was registered under her name. Srirangam police have registered a case under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving, which addresses endangering human life or personal safety of others.
Additionally, they invoked Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, which holds parents, guardians, or vehicle owners criminally responsible for traffic offences committed by juveniles. This dual legal approach underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating such violations, especially involving minors.
Outcome and Ongoing Investigation
Both the juvenile and his aunt were released on bail following their arrests, but the investigation is still progressing. Police officials emphasized that this case serves as a stern warning to vehicle owners and guardians about their accountability in preventing underage and unlicensed driving.
The enforcement drive near Srirangam is part of broader efforts to curb traffic violations and enhance road safety in Trichy. Authorities have urged the public to ensure proper documentation and adherence to traffic laws to avoid similar legal consequences.
