In a significant move to address escalating security concerns, a top official from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) conducted an on-ground assessment of the India-Myanmar frontier. Dr Rajendra Kumar, the Union Secretary for Border Management, undertook this crucial review during an official visit to Moreh in Manipur's Tengnoupal district on Saturday.
Growing Vulnerabilities on the Eastern Frontier
Officials highlighted that the border region has faced mounting pressures in recent months. Key challenges include a steady inflow of refugees escaping conflict zones in Myanmar, active narcotics smuggling networks taking advantage of the porous landscape, and attempts by armed factions to cross into Indian territory. This complex situation has prompted the central government to prioritize strengthening both physical infrastructure and technological surveillance to ensure stability in the sensitive region.
On-Ground Inspection and High-Level Meetings
Secretary Kumar personally inspected forward border posts and surveillance systems, interacting directly with security personnel to understand operational hurdles. Following the field visit, he chaired a high-level meeting with key stakeholders including the Assam Rifles, which is the primary force guarding this border, the local administration, and representatives from other security agencies.
In the discussions, he emphasized the critical need to optimize patrolling patterns and enhance real-time intelligence sharing among all agencies. A government statement noted his push for the swift integration of modern technology, specifically calling for the use of drones and advanced sensor systems. This initiative aims to create a "smart" border management framework that can dynamically respond to emerging and evolving threats.
Balancing Security with Legitimate Cross-Border Ties
While focusing on tightening security, Dr Kumar also acknowledged the difficult conditions under which the security forces operate. He reiterated the government's commitment to protecting national integrity without disrupting legitimate cross-border trade and movement. He urged all agencies to maintain a state of high operational readiness and foster proactive coordination to effectively curb illegal activities.
Concluding his visit, the MHA Secretary commended the vigilance and dedication of the Assam Rifles and other partner agencies. He issued directives for the continuous upgrading of border security measures, stressing that the strategy must adeptly balance the dual imperatives of humanitarian sensitivity and robust national security.
