A tragic incident in Maharashtra's Latur district has sparked outrage after a 22-year-old man died by suicide, leaving behind a video on social media accusing two police personnel of relentless harassment. The case has led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused officers on charges of abetment to suicide.
The Tragic Discovery and Viral Allegations
Imran Khalilmia Belure, a resident of Aurad, was found deceased on Thursday evening. His body was discovered hanging from a tree in a wooded area near the Terna River. Before taking this extreme step, Belure recorded and uploaded a video that quickly circulated across social media platforms. In the footage, he directly accused an assistant police inspector (PSI) and a police driver of subjecting him and his family to persistent harassment.
Belure, who worked at a shop, had a police record. Latur Superintendent of Police Amol Tambe confirmed that two FIRs were registered against him: one from his juvenile years and another in 2022 related to a house-breaking case. While the stolen goods from the 2022 case were recovered, Belure alleged in his video that the police visits and questioning did not stop. He claimed officers frequently came to his home late at night, intimidated his family members, and caused him severe mental anguish.
Public Outcry and Police Response
The situation escalated quickly after Belure's body was found. A large crowd of local residents and the young man's relatives gathered at the scene. They refused to allow authorities to bring down the body or conduct the official panchnama (inquest report) until a formal case was filed against the police personnel named in the viral video.
The autopsy was eventually performed on Friday at the Nilanga government hospital. Later that same day, Belure's grieving relatives marched to the Nilanga police station to stage a protest. Their central demand was the immediate registration of an FIR against the concerned officers.
FIR Registered and Ongoing Investigation
Yielding to the pressure, the Nilanga police acted on a complaint filed by Belure's brother. An FIR for abetment to suicide was registered on Friday against the named police driver and an unidentified PSI. SP Amol Tambe addressed the media, stating, "The video does not mention the PSI's name. The probe will establish which PSI was involved in the action, and action will be taken accordingly."
Tambe also offered a perspective on the police's interaction with Belure, suggesting it might have been part of routine preventive monitoring. "As part of routine preventive measures, police personnel keep track of individuals on police records. The victim (Belure) might have felt harassed for this process," he explained. The investigation is now ongoing to uncover the full sequence of events and the extent of the alleged harassment that led to this young man's desperate act.
