A man allegedly stabbed his wife and mother-in-law to death and left his father-in-law critically injured in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, police said.
Incident Details
Ballia Superintendent of Police Omvir Singh stated that a domestic dispute between the accused and his wife is suspected to be the trigger behind the attack. Three teams have been formed to arrest the accused, identified as Amit Kumar Gupta, according to news agency PTI. The incident occurred in Hasanpur village under the Nagra police station area when Amit allegedly entered his in-laws' house around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday by climbing onto the roof. He then slit the throats of his wife, Preeti Gupta (23), and mother-in-law, Sushila Devi (55), with a knife, police said.
Injuries and Response
When his father-in-law, Antu Gupta (60), tried to intervene, Amit allegedly attacked him as well, leaving him critically injured. Antu Gupta was first taken to the district hospital and later referred to a trauma centre in Varanasi after his condition deteriorated. Police said Amit also attempted to strangulate his sister-in-law when she tried to intervene before fleeing the scene.
Legal Proceedings
Based on a complaint filed by a family member, a case of murder has been registered, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. The couple had been married for five years, and the woman had returned to her parental home about a month ago, police added.
