A significant security incident unfolded at the highly revered Ram temple in Ayodhya on Saturday evening when a visitor from Kashmir attempted to offer Islamic prayers within the complex. The event triggered immediate action from security forces and has put the shrine's protection protocols under intense examination.
Details of the Temple Incident
The individual involved has been identified as Abu Ahmad Sheikh, aged 55, a resident of Wodapora village in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. According to officials, Sheikh had completed the darshan (viewing of the deity) and was in the process of exiting the premises. It was at this point that security personnel observed him attempting to offer namaz near the southern circumambulatory corridor, an area close to the Sita Rasoi, which is a restricted zone.
The security team promptly intervened and restrained the man. Sources indicate that Sheikh raised slogans after being stopped, which escalated the situation and led to intelligence agencies and police swiftly taking charge. He was subsequently taken to the Ram Janmabhoomi police outpost for detailed questioning.
Investigation and Official Response
The interrogation is being conducted under the supervision of SP (Security) Balramachari Dubey. Ayodhya Senior Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Grover, confirmed that the man's antecedents are being thoroughly verified. A detailed report has also been sought from the Jammu and Kashmir Police to understand his background better.
SSP Grover clarified that no suspicious object was recovered from Abu Ahmad Sheikh's possession. As of late Saturday evening, neither the district administration nor the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust had issued an official statement regarding the occurrence.
Security Architecture Under Focus
This event inside the high-security temple complex has sharply brought Ayodhya's security measures into the spotlight. The temple witnesses an average daily footfall of around 1.5 lakh devotees since the consecration of Ram Lalla, making its protection a paramount concern.
Several former Directors General of Police (DGPs) emphasized that the shrine's security must remain uncompromising. They stressed the need for constantly evolving protocols considering the site's immense religious significance, the massive influx of visitors, and a rising perception of threat.
In light of repeated threats and the high footfall, the state government is already planning to establish a permanent National Security Guard (NSG) hub in Ayodhya. This move aims to significantly strengthen rapid response capabilities to potential terror threats and other high-risk situations, ensuring the safety of the millions of pilgrims who visit the temple city.
