Convicted Man Makes Dramatic Escape After Court Sentencing in Roorkee
A 35-year-old man managed to escape from police custody in Roorkee on Friday. This shocking incident occurred moments after a local court sentenced him in a cheque bounce case. The escape has triggered a major search operation across the district.
Swift Escape Following Sentencing
Neeraj Goswami received a one-year prison sentence from the court. He was convicted under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. The case involved a dishonoured cheque worth Rs 2.5 lakh due to insufficient funds.
Police officials reported that Goswami fled immediately after the sentencing. A police court clerk had taken him into custody and was escorting him out of the courtroom. The convict somehow evaded his escort and escaped from the court premises entirely.
Immediate Suspension and Investigation Ordered
The district police administration responded quickly to the security lapse. Authorities suspended the concerned court clerk with immediate effect. They also ordered a formal inquiry into how the escape could happen.
SP (Rural) Shekhar Chandra Suyal received specific instructions to conduct the probe. He will investigate the circumstances that allowed the convicted man to escape police custody so easily.
Intensive Search Operation Underway
Police teams launched raids at multiple locations to find the fugitive. They searched Goswami's residence thoroughly. Officers also checked possible hideouts in his native village of Rahmatpur, located near Kaliyar.
Despite these efforts, Goswami's current whereabouts remain unknown. The search continues as police expand their operation across the region.
Official Statement on the Situation
SP Suyal provided an update on the case. He confirmed the suspension of the court clerk involved in the incident. The police officer also outlined their current strategy.
"We have suspended the court clerk and deployed multiple teams to trace the convict," Suyal stated. "He will be arrested soon."
The police remain confident about recapturing Goswami. They continue to follow all possible leads in their investigation.
