Odisha Police Detain Man for Allegedly Killing Wife During Quarrel in Bonai
In a tragic incident in Sundargarh district, Odisha, Bonai police have detained a 40-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh on charges of killing his wife during a domestic dispute. The couple's four minor children have been handed over to Childline for immediate care and long-term rehabilitation, highlighting the devastating impact of the event on the young family.
Mobile Lifestyle Ends in Tragedy
The accused, identified as Ajay Singh, along with his 33-year-old wife Soma and their four children, led a nomadic lifestyle, traveling from place to place in a van to sell Ayurvedic medicinal items. Police reports indicate that the family had been camping at Babnuagaon in the Bonai area for several days prior to the incident.
Details of the Fatal Altercation
According to authorities, a quarrel erupted between the couple on Thursday night. During the argument, Ajay allegedly slapped Soma, causing her to fall and strike her head on a stone. The impact resulted in serious injuries, prompting Ajay to immediately rush his wife to the Bonai subdivisional hospital for medical attention.
Due to the severity of her condition, Soma was referred to the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH), where doctors declared her brought dead early on Friday morning. This swift escalation from a domestic dispute to a fatal outcome has shocked the local community and drawn police intervention.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Upon receiving information from RGH, Bonai police swiftly arrived at the hospital to initiate legal action. The accused was taken to Bonai police station for detailed interrogation, while Soma's body was placed in the mortuary for further examination.
Police have notified Soma's parents, who are residents of Bargarh district. The postmortem examination is scheduled for Saturday, after which the body will be handed over to her family members for last rites. This procedural step is crucial for both legal documentation and providing closure to the grieving relatives.

Pinky Kumari Murmu, inspector in charge of Bonai police station, confirmed the detention and ongoing investigation.
