Man Arrested for Axe Murder in Odisha Village Following Wedding Argument
A 30-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the brutal axe murder of a youth in Bhaludungri village, located under the jurisdiction of the Bonai police station in Odisha's Sundargarh district. The incident, which stemmed from a dispute after a marriage ceremony, has sent shockwaves through the local community.
Details of the Fatal Altercation
The victim, identified as Fagu Munda, aged 19 and a resident of Lahunipada police station limits in the Bonai sub-division, had traveled to Bhaludungri village on Monday to attend a marriage ceremony at the house of his brother-in-law, Khageswar Munda. The celebration took a tragic turn later that evening.
According to police reports, Fagu Munda, Khageswar Munda, and another villager were returning from the wedding festivities when they became embroiled in an argument with Rajesh Nayak, a local resident of Bhaludungri village. The disagreement reportedly centered on the route the group was using. The verbal altercation quickly escalated into a physical scuffle, after which all parties involved dispersed temporarily.
The Deadly Night Attack
The situation turned fatal later that night. Around 11:30 PM, Fagu Munda, Khageswar Munda, and the other villager were sitting in front of Khageswar's house when Rajesh Nayak arrived at the scene. In a sudden and violent assault, Rajesh allegedly attacked Fagu Munda with an axe, striking him near the ear. Fagu collapsed immediately, having sustained grievous injuries in the attack.
Rajesh then attempted to attack the others present, but Khageswar Munda and the other villager managed to flee to safety. After Rajesh left the area, Khageswar rushed the critically injured Fagu to the Bonai sub-divisional hospital for emergency medical attention.
Medical Efforts and Tragic Outcome
Due to the severity of his injuries, Fagu Munda was referred to the Rourkela Government Hospital for advanced treatment. He was subsequently shifted to a private hospital in a last-ditch effort to save his life. Tragically, doctors at the private hospital declared him brought dead on Tuesday, confirming that the axe attack had proven fatal.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Following the death, Khageswar Munda lodged a formal First Information Report (FIR) at the Bonai police station on Tuesday. A police team, accompanied by forensic experts, promptly inspected the crime scene, recovered the victim's body, and sent it for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The autopsy was conducted on Wednesday, after which the body was handed over to the grieving family for last rites.
