TMC MP Mahua Moitra Moves Delhi High Court in Pet Rottweiler Custody Dispute
TMC MP Mahua Moitra has escalated her legal battle over the custody of her pet Rottweiler, Henry, by approaching the Delhi High Court on Thursday. This move comes after a district court rejected her plea for shared custody of the dog, which she had sought for 10 days each month.
High Court Seeks Response from Former Partner
The Delhi High Court has directed Jai Anant Dehadrai, Moitra's former partner and an advocate, to file his response to her appeal. Dehadrai appeared in person during the proceedings and argued that the petition should be dismissed outright, claiming it lacks merit. The court has scheduled the next hearing for April 29 to further deliberate on the matter.
Moitra's Arguments for Shared Custody
In her appeal, Mahua Moitra contended that the district court's decision was "bad in law and on facts." She emphasized that Henry was given to her as a pet to be loved and cared for, and he primarily resided at her residence. Moitra explained that the dog only stayed with Dehadrai when she was away on constituency duties, underscoring her primary role in his care.
Dehadrai's Counterclaims and Past Disputes
Jai Anant Dehadrai has countered Moitra's claims by asserting that he purchased the Rottweiler in 2021. Moitra, however, argues that due to her friendship with Dehadrai at the time, she is entitled to joint custody of the pet. This legal tussle follows a previous instance last year when the High Court advised both parties to "sit together" and resolve the dispute amicably. Both individuals have accused each other of "kidnapping" Henry, with each claiming ownership of the dog.
The case highlights the complexities of pet custody battles, especially when intertwined with personal relationships and legal interpretations. As the hearing date approaches, all eyes are on the Delhi High Court's forthcoming decision, which could set a precedent for similar disputes in the future.
