On the festive occasion of Lohri, the Ludhiana Rural Police took a proactive step to enhance public safety. They launched a special preventive drive aimed at protecting two-wheeler riders from the dangers of banned plastic kite strings. These strings, often used in kite-flying activities, have caused injuries in the past, prompting this timely intervention.
Distributing Protective Shields
As a key part of the initiative, police officers distributed iron angle shields to riders across the area. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP-Dakha) Varinder Singh Khosa explained the purpose behind this move. He stated that these iron angles act as effective shields, preventing injuries from the deadly plastic kite strings that can pose serious risks to motorists.
Community Involvement and Directives
The police did not work alone in this effort. They received support from some good samaritans who helped in distributing the iron angles. Additionally, village sarpanches and municipal council members were given clear instructions. They were directed to ensure that any hanging kite string was removed immediately whenever spotted in their jurisdictions.
Khosa highlighted that this drive was initiated after a couple of cases were reported where people suffered injuries due to the banned string. To address the root cause, the police are also taking strict action against those involved in selling and purchasing the prohibited kite strings.
Drive to Continue Until Basant Panchami
The preventive drive is not a one-day event. It will continue until Basant Panchami, covering a significant period to maximize its impact. During this time, the police have made a strong appeal to the public. They are urging people to use safer kite strings that do not pose a threat to others, especially two-wheeler riders.
