Ludhiana Police Finally File FIR in Assault and Arson Case After Two-Month Delay

The Model Town police in Ludhiana have officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) in a disturbing case involving the alleged sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman and the subsequent arson attack on her father's vehicle. This action comes more than two months after the initial incidents occurred, with authorities citing ongoing compromise negotiations between the parties as the primary reason for the delay.

Details of the Alleged Assault and Retaliation

According to the victim's account, the incident began on January 2 when she was alone at her residence. Two neighbors allegedly forced their way into the home and attempted to sexually assault her. The woman's screams for help alerted local residents, who quickly intervened, apprehending the two accused individuals. The gathered crowd reportedly subjected the men to physical assault and compelled them to apologize to the victim.

However, the situation escalated dramatically the following night on January 3. The family reported hearing a loud explosion and rushed outside to discover the father's pickup jeep, which was parked outside their house, completely engulfed in flames. This act of arson is believed to have been carried out by the accused in retaliation for their public humiliation.

Police Action and Legal Framework

Following the arson attack, the family immediately filed a formal complaint with the Model Town police. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, which include attempted sexual assault and property destruction, the FIR was only registered after an approximate delay of two and a half months.

Investigating officer ASI Avtar Singh confirmed that a case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The specific charges include:

  • Section 74: Assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty
  • Section 351(2): Criminal intimidation
  • Section 326(f): Mischief by fire or explosive substances intended to damage property
  • Section 3(5): Acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention

Reason for Delay and Current Status

When questioned about the significant delay in registering the FIR, ASI Avtar Singh explained that the complainant and the accused were initially engaged in discussions aimed at reaching a compromise settlement. These talks ultimately proved unsuccessful, leading to the formal registration of the case.

Police have taken action by arresting one of the two accused individuals on Friday. Authorities have confirmed that efforts are currently underway to locate and apprehend the second suspect involved in both the alleged assault and the arson attack. The investigation remains active as police gather additional evidence and statements related to the case.

The delayed response has raised questions about police procedures in cases involving serious criminal allegations, particularly when compromise negotiations are involved. The Model Town police have emphasized their commitment to pursuing the case through the legal system now that formal charges have been filed.
