Ludhiana: Another case of an employer “resolving” professional issues with a worker by abducting and thrashing him has come to light in the city.
Months after a machine operator quit his job because he was not being paid, his employer allegedly abducted him with his aides and thrashed him in the factory premises. CCTV camera installed near the spot shows the accused forcing the victim into the car.
Sahnewal police registered a case against Karan Kumar Yadav of Giaspura Road and his associates Rauni, Anil, Pramod, Rajiv and two others on the complaint of 19-year-old Parvesh Gupta. Yadav is the youth’s former employer.
Parvesh Gupta told the police that the kidnapping was linked to an ongoing dispute over unpaid wages. He alleged that he worked as a CNC machine operator in a factory owned by Yadav at Sua Road, Giaspura. He quit about a month ago as his salary was not being paid on time.
Gupta said he asked his former employers for his dues before quitting but was thrashed for it. Thereafter, he started working at another place.
On June 16, when he was on his way to work, a car stopped near him. Accused Karan Kumar Yadav, along with Rouni, Anil, Pramod, Rajiv and two unidentified youths, stepped out of the vehicle. They allegedly dragged him into the car and took him to a factory, where they allegedly confined and assaulted him. Later, he said they released him on the condition that he would not file a police complaint against them.
ASI Karanjit Singh, who is investigating the case, said police have registered a case under sections 140 (3) (kidnapping or abducting a person with the intent to secretly and wrongfully confine them), 127 (2) (wrongful confinement), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 190 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of BNS. A hunt is on for the arrest of the accused.
Second Case in Two Days
On June 16, police lodged a case against a factory owner and his three associates for kidnapping a former worker. They allegedly confined him in the factory and thrashed him for quitting over nonpayment of wages. The case was registered against Harvinder Singh alias Sunny (former employer), and his accomplices Neeraj Kumar and Anil Kumar on the complaint of Jitender Kumar, a resident of Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh.
A Dangerous Precedent
In Feb 2025, a hosiery factory owner allegedly wrongfully confined a worker because a new employee, whom the worker had recommended, left the job shortly after joining. Police rescued the confined worker and arrested the factory owner.
In Aug 2024, the family of a hosiery factory worker alleged that his employer sent men to his house, where they assaulted him and pushed him from a rooftop. The worker later died of his injuries. The victim had reportedly complained of harassment by the employer before the attack.
