Initial investigations point to a startlingly simple cause for the destructive fire. According to preliminary reports, children in the vicinity had lit a small bonfire to keep warm against the winter chill. Embers from this fire, carried by the wind, landed inside the scrap warehouse. The facility was filled with highly flammable materials, which ignited almost instantly.
The flames spread with alarming speed, transforming a minor spark into a raging inferno within minutes. Thick, black smoke poured from the site, blanketing the densely populated neighborhood and causing alarm among residents.
