In a significant operation, the Karnataka Lokayukta conducted a raid on the residence of a retired superintendent engineer in Kalaburagi on Wednesday. The raid led to the discovery of approximately Rs 9 lakh in demonetised old currency notes of Rs 1,000 denomination, along with more than 200 grams of gold stored in a bank locker.
Details of the Raid
The operation, carried out by a team of Lokayukta officials, targeted the premises of the retired engineer, whose identity has not been disclosed. The officials acted on credible intelligence regarding the accumulation of disproportionate assets. During the search, they uncovered the stash of old currency notes, which were rendered invalid after the 2016 demonetisation drive, and a significant quantity of gold.
Investigation Underway
The Lokayukta has initiated a thorough investigation to determine the source of these assets. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the retired engineer may have accumulated wealth beyond his known sources of income. The officials are scrutinising financial records and other documents seized during the raid.
This development has raised eyebrows in the region, as the use of demonetised currency indicates possible involvement in illicit financial activities. The Lokayukta is expected to file a detailed report soon, and further actions will be taken based on the findings.
