Liquor Drips from Train Ceiling in Bizarre Bihar Smuggling Attempt
Passengers aboard the Anand Vihar-Raxaul Satyagrah Express (train number 15274) experienced an extraordinary and unsettling incident on Saturday when they witnessed an unusual liquid dripping from the roof of their coach. Instead of rainwater, it was liquor that was seeping through the ceiling, creating a bizarre spectacle that left everyone on board astonished.
Discovery of Hidden Contraband
The incident unfolded as the train was passing through Pipraich in Uttar Pradesh around 11 am. Travelers in coach S-4 initially noticed a steady drip from the rooftop, which quickly raised suspicions. Alert passengers promptly informed the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel who were escorting the train. Upon inspection, the RPF team made a startling discovery: the ceiling of the coach had been converted into a makeshift storage space for illicit liquor.
Approximately 15 to 20 liquor bottles were found carefully concealed in the narrow space above the passengers' heads. The ingenious hiding spot, however, proved to be flawed. Due to the high speed of the train, some of the bottles were damaged, causing the liquor to leak out and drip from the ceiling. This leakage ultimately exposed the smugglers' covert operation, according to an RPF official.
Official Response and Investigation
Varanasi RPF Commandant S Radhakishnan confirmed the seizure, stating, "The liquor bottles were seized from the spot valued at Rs 20,000." He added that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the incident, but efforts are underway to identify those responsible for attempting to smuggle the contraband into Bihar.
The train was near Kaptanganj under the Varanasi division of the North Eastern Railway (NER) in Uttar Pradesh when the discovery was made. The Satyagrah Express was bound for Raxaul in Bihar, a state where prohibition laws strictly ban the sale and consumption of alcohol.
Highlighting Smuggling Challenges
This bizarre episode underscores the extreme measures smugglers take to transport liquor into dry states like Bihar. Railway officials note that smugglers frequently employ novel methods to evade checks, including:
- Concealing bottles in bags and parcels
- Using creative hiding spots within train compartments
- Exploiting unsuspecting passengers or railway staff
However, few attempts have resulted in such a dramatic mid-journey exposure, with the contraband literally leaking from its hiding place. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in enforcing prohibition laws and combating illicit trade.
